Under the artistic direction of Thomas Carroll the Orpheus Sinfonia, the orchestra of the Orpheus Foundation, has established a growing reputation as one of the UK’s most vibrant and dynamic groups of talented young musicians.
The orchestra was established in 2008 to provide opportunities for artists emerging from their studies into professional careers. The Orpheus Sinfonia already has a track record to be reckoned with having performed with world-class soloists such as Tasmin Little, Xuefei Yang and Hyung-ki Joo and has premiered works by their composer-in-residence, Stephen Goss, including his renowned piano concerto, and his quintuple concerto; at the forefront of innovation being the first ever classical concert for interactive tablet.
The orchestra is resident at St George's Hanover Square where it holds a season of concerts each year, as well as regular performances at Cadogan Hall. Acclaimed for its, ‘brimming excitement and sheer enthusiasm for musical excellence’, thanks to the generous support of established musicians, the orchestra’s status continues to grow.
The orchestra has recently embarked on its first ever operatic project, Die Fledermaus, in partnership with Opera Danube. To compliment this adventurous operatic challenge the orchestra are delighted to be performing with Dame Felicity Lott at the Windsor Festival and at Cadogan Hall on the 25th of September 2014.
In addition to their scheduled 2014/15 events at other major festivals in the UK, the Orpheus Sinfonia has also been invited to Japan to work with students from Fukushima, an outreach project which included exciting projects at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.
The orchestra recently collaborated with Emmanuel Despax for the world-premiere of the Stephen Goss Piano Concerto, Franck Symphonique Variations and Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 for Orpheus Sinfonia’s debut CD available on the Signum Classics Label. Play the YouTube clip on the right.
